The Things They Carried-=+_+=-Finished

March 25, 2007

More of the same themes are brought up as we finished the book.  The most referenced theme would have to be the effects of war.  One chapter is of O’Brien being shot twice, another of how Rat Kiley begins going crazy, and the last of O’Brien’s memories of his childhood sweet heart.

The part that best shows the terrible effects of war is the chapter “Night Life,” in which Rat Kiley begins to go insane.  Their platoon receives an alert warning and is forced to move through the night.  Rat Kiley began to go crazy, first completely silent, then constantly talking.  He’d scratch at his bug bites, rip off the scabs, and scratch the open wounds.  A thing as simple as switching from daytime to night time drove this man crazy because of the aprehension caused by this war.

War is also able to bring back painful memories of death.  His childhood sweetheart, Linda, came flooding back through O’Brien’s mind.  After his first death experience with an enemy he is reminded of a terrible reminder in his childhood.  In a way, this event with Linda foreshadowed O’Brien’s participation of the war, even though ironically this event wasn’t even introduced to readers until the last chapter.  Overall, this book was one of the best and most interesting books I’ve ever read and I look forward to reading more Tim O’Brien books in the future.

Satire Post #2

December 19, 2006

Satire, demonstrated in The Colbert Report and The Daily Show, is what people love to watch.  People making fun of other people and saying rediculous things appeals to people.  The main reason for this popularity is because of how funny these can be.  Reporting on news and at the same time, mocking it, creates a hilarious atmosphere especially in these two shows.

People want to see others be outrageous and rediculous because they themselves are not outspoken or courageous enough.  It’s like when people talk about how funny it would be if someone did that, or how crazy it would be if he actually said that.  These shows are simply doing the out of the ordinary things, and have made a career out of it.

1st Satire Blog

Satire is popular simply because its funny.  Stereotypes are made and talked about behind these different ethnic groups’ backs.  In attempts of satire such as Borat, these stereotypes are brought right to everyone’s faces.  Also, the people that are saying these ridiculous untrue things are real people and are saying what they actually think about other ethnic groups.  People are able to use this as humor by using these stereotypes and appear very out of the ordinary.  Who actually walks around criticizing social groups?  The reactions of the people are what make the satire funny.

The reason Scary Movie isn’t considered satire is because of the issues it deals with.  Satire is based on the largest and worst social problems going on during that time period.  Scary movies are definitely not a social problem.  So while the comedy in Scary Movie and different satires can be very similar, it still cannot be considered satire.

Other Shakespeare Production

November 8, 2006

I watched the movie, Much Ado About Nothing, with Denzel and Keanu Reaves.  In this production, it was hard to tell that these actors talked normally in their real lives.  They spoke with such fluency and clarity that it seemed like thats how they always spoke.  Their moods were another part of their acting that made the movie seem more realistic.  I believed that Don John was a really evil person, and I thought that Count Claudio was really innocent and friendly.  Don Pedro seemed like a great friend and person as well.  I was convinced by the acting skills of the cast.  The individual moods for every scene were shown greatly.  Happiness ,anger, sadness, hatred, and other powerful emotions were created, making the movie very exciting and believable.

Scottish Play Progess

October 20, 2006

Our group is working very well together.  We are going to be performing Act 2, scenes 2,3 and 4.  Our cast has been decided and other aspects of the project are coming into place.  We have just begun to start the costumes for the characters as well as the soundtrack.  There was some argument over who was gonig to be playing Macbeth, but it was settled fairly quickly.  The line memorizing is starting to happen, but people still are uneasy about their lines.  Everyone is doing their job well and working together and I expect that we will do very well when it comes time to present.

evil

September 11, 2006

My definition of evil would be when a being or object is hurting everyone around them physically or mentally.  Also evil can be perceived as having all seven of the deadly sins which are pride, gluttony, greed, sloth, lust, envy, and wrath.  In this movie, the bad guy John Doe is evil, because by killing everyone that he thinks is committing a sin he is actually drawing sins upon himself.  I also believe that Terrell Owens has in the past shown demonstrations of being evil.  The way he destroyed the Eagles franchise really made me realize that this man was being evil.

In history and literature there have been many figures of evil.  I believe that Curly, in the book Of Mice and Men is an evil person.  He brings harm to whoever he comes across and demonstrates greatly the meaning of wrath.  I also believe that Adolf Hitler was an evil man for killing all of the innocent people that he did.  Osama bin Laden is another man who I believe is evil for all of the mass murdering hes done throughout his life.
